Brazilian play Orfeu da Conceição reinterpreted for the Arts & Humanities Festival

The Brazilian play Orfeu da Conceição will be one of the best reasons to go along to the King’s College Arts & Humanities Festival.

Playing with Orpheus is the name of the English interpretation of this Brazilian classic, to be put on at the Great Hall King’s Building, Strand Campus, King’s College London.

Written by Vinicius de Moraes, with music by Antônio Carlos Jobim, and scenery by Oscar Niemeyer, the original Brazilian version inspired a generation of artists, and was the basis of films such as Black Orpheus (1959) and Orpheus (1999), as well as the musicals Orpheus (2010) and Black Orpheus, a 2014 Broadway production.

The story is based on the well-known Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, but with Rio’s carnival and favelas as its backdrop. The themes bring together Moraes’ favourite subject matters: the interplay between music and poetry, the indefinable power of a woman’s presence, an obsession with death and faith in ever-lasting love.

Elaborating on these elements whilst also bringing others to the traditional tale, the new interpretation’s dynamic mix consists of singers, actors, dancers and the King’s Brazil Ensemble with guest musicians, as well as the public, who are also invited to take an active role in “Playing with Orpheus”.
