When we think of fashion, the British always come to mind. From renowned stylists to stunning models, the Brits have a special touch when it comes to style.
What really stands out, however, is the way that certain British women have
embraced fashion throughout their lives. Some of them have become so important that their names have left an indelible mark on the fashion world.
Lesley Hornby, better known as Twiggy, made her name on the catwalks of the 60s. She was discovered by a photographer at the age of 16 and with her flair and iconic hairstyle still remains to this day a reference for up and coming models. With time, Twiggy became an actress and a singer and nowadays she has her own line of clothing, footwear and accessories.
Kate Moss is another British supermodel, scouted at the age of 14. Despite being short and skinny, not the look of that time, her natural beauty was enough to get her noticed. It didn’t take her long to attract the attention of the major fashion labels, and despite numerous controversies over the course of her career, she has always been able to pick herself up and is one of today’s highest paid models.
Kelly Brook (Kelly Ann Parsons) is a contemporary model with her place guaranteed in fashion’s history. After her mother signed her up to a beauty pageant at the age of 16, her career took off; she has been nominated as the world’s sexiest woman and holds several contracts with world-renowned brands.
Behind the scenes, we can’t forget to mention the stylist Vivienne Westwood, who was responsible for creating the Punk look in the 70s, boldly promoting underwear as “over wear” (bras worn over dresses), as well as putting the corset back on the catwalk. Another well-known stylist is
Stella McCartney, daughter of ex-Beatle Paul and Linda McCartney, who shot to fame by designing her first collection whilst still studying fashion. Years later she would go on to become the creative director of a major brand. One of her most famous projects was the design of the Great Britain Olympic and Paralympic uniforms used in London 2012, which she recently updated for Rio 2016.
These are all great women, who have secured their place in contemporary culture and each day inspire more and more youngsters involved in the magical world of fashion.
