Located in the northeast of Italy, Veneto is bordered by Austria. Its seven provinces are Vicenza, Padua, Belluno, Rovigo, Treviso, Venice and Verona. Each has plenty to explore and are amply equipped to satisfy even the most diverse of tastes.
Veneto’s heritage is wonderfully rich in terms of history and culture. It’s also the most visited part of Italy, with about 60 million tourists every year. In addition to Italian, most of the locals also speak a Venetian dialect.
Venice is the capital, famed for its waterways and canals, but its cycling routes are also internationally acclaimed among both professional and amateur cycling communities. Those who love serene bike rides can’t help but fall in love with the region as the landscapes are simply magnificent.
Cycle Tourism
In Venice, the perfect cycling choice for those seeking a one-of-a-kind experience is the Venice Lagoon, as the route marries scenery, fun and culture. This ride aims to show tourists a different side of Venice and get away from the hustle and bustle of the city. The bike rides usually last about four hours and are managed in small groups (max. 10 people). The route weaves through the most unusual historical and cultural places of the city, avoiding crowds and the normal thoroughfares.
In Tronchetto, near Piazzale Roma, there are always several guides only too happy to tell you the history of this fabulous place. At Lido, the bike ride starts off at a very relaxed pace along the lagoon. The route is 16km in total, so is suitable for all levels and is a favourite among couples given the romantic surroundings.
Another amorous two-wheel spin starts in Verona and is a comfortable 3-hour peddle. Take time to stop at some of the sights of Verona, such as the Roman bridge over the river Adige, the two Roman theatres, and the old city walls. Another tip would be to climb to the top of Castel San Pietro: you’ll be rewarded with enthralling views of this alluring city. Pedalling through the historic centre of Verona is like a lesson in Italian art and architecture, which was listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Groups are limited to eight cyclists, to ensure a more intimate tour. The tour passes by Verona’s famous, tucked away monuments, museums and churches, as well as the mainstay attractions of Verona, including Castelvecchio and the Verona Arena. In addition, this route allows you to relive the story of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, at the Basilica di San Zeno where Juliet lived, on the Pietra Bridge.
Another endearing route in Veneto, in the province of Venice, starts at the Isle of Pallestrina, a quaint fishing village with picturesque houses. The crossing leads to Lido, where the Venice International Film Festival also takes place. This is a 30km cycle, so a great stretch to enjoy with friends. What’s more, it ends in the centre of Venice where the local nightlife offers ample options to help you unwind and enjoy the evening.
