Finally, after so much expectation and anticipation, the Rio 2016 Olympic Games officially get underway today.
The ceremony promises to be a full on spectacle, with plenty of special effects and light shows. The theme of the show is the ‘history of Brazil’, and will tell the story of the construction of Brazilian society. The music will of course feature lots of Carnival and Samba hits, and all in all the ceremony should be one of the most unforgettable of all time.
A number of successful Brazilian pop-stars are set to perform, including: Wesley Safadão, Wilson das Neves, Karol Conka, Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso, Marcelo D2, Paulinho da Viola, Diogo Nogueira, Ludmilla, Anita and Elza Soares. Another famous Brazilian will also be making an appearance – Gisele Bündchen will walk down a virtual catwalk to the sounds of Tom Jobim’s ‘Girl from Ipanema’.
Whilst on the subject of music – quite a few different styles will be represented throughout the show, reflecting Brazilian culture’s diversity. Expect to hear some Rock, Samba, MPB, Brazilian Funk and Rap. There will also be a rendition, from Paulinho da Viola, of the Brazilian national anthem. What’s more, a replica of the 14-bis, Santos Dumont’s first ever airplane, will fly across the stage.
As the delegations enter the stadium, carrying the flag for Brazil will be the Pentathlon athlete Yane Marques (Bronze medal winner at London 2012), while the Tennis player Andy Murray (Gold at London 2012) will lead out Team GB.
The question on everyone’s lips, however, is who is going to light the Olympic Pyre. Pelé is perhaps the most likely candidate, but no official indication has been given, so we will all just have to wait and see!
The pre-show will start at 7:15pm and the official start time for the opening ceremony is 8pm local time (midnight in the UK).
