On Tuesday, 16 August, The Embassy of Brazil in London’s Cineclub will have a showing of the film “Neighbouring Sounds”, by Kleber Mendonça Filho.
The film looks at the shared use of urban spaces among different social classes and the way they interact with one another, paying particular attention to the way sounds and silence can affect this relationship.
The story takes place in Recife, Pernambuco. It tells the tale of the residents of an expensive apartment block, who are worried about a recent spate of robberies in the neighbourhood. The community is led by a somewhat obscure patriarch and her children, who bring in a team of security guards to take control of the situation. The problem is that not all of the residents are so eager to welcome their new protectors.
