In the UK, “Terça-feira Gorda” (Fat Tuesday) is known more commonly as Shrove Tuesday, or Pancake Day.
The date marks the beginning of Lent – a 40-day period of abstinence leading up to Easter – and the star of the day is the pancake. As well as eating them, there is the traditional of “pancake races”. Perhaps the most famous of races, which takes place in front of the Houses of Parliament and helps to raise awareness for people with disabilities, has been held annually for the last 19 years.
